So I watched the match between Carlton and GWS and for the most part there were some good aspects, not so good aspects and aspects that need work.  But I’m not going discuss or debate these as it is what I kind of expected from a club that is in essence, still re-building.  I’m going to discuss the comments made during the match by so-called arm-chair supporters who have this mentality that once a club that was in the doldrums only last season, has won more games than expected, should now all of a sudden become a top 8 contender! That these so-called supporters bag, criticize not only the players but the coaches as well.

I am perplexed and to be frank, quite disappointed in footy supporters as a whole who love to support a club when they are on top, when they are firing and heading on an upwards climb then turn their backs when they are on a downward slide.  Not Carlton related, but if you watched the Collingwood match against the Dockers, how appalling was the turnout of those supporters who are supposedly die-hard ones in a club with more members than Carlton. I don’t buy into the fact that it was cold! Footy is played in the colder months, what do you really expect! A few weeks ago, the same appalling lack of supporters went missing in Richmond who have about 70,000 members! Then you look at a club like Adelaide who no matter what, or where, turn up in droves to support their team, win/lose or draw.

The moment the so-called power-houses of the AFL, the Richmonds, the Collingwoods etc. start winning, bam!, there are the supporters cheering their team on as if their heart and soul was on the field. The moment they start sliding down the ladder, bam again!, they go missing. Then they hop on social media and bag the shit out of the players and club instead of doing what they should be doing…SUPPORTING! When it comes to a team such as Carlton who are in the re-building stage of their journey and I repeat RE-BUILDING, the daggers, nay the swords of judgement are taken out in droves with those same swords being put away in far corners of dusty cupboards when we win.

Let me point out something blatantly obvious, we are not going to play in finals this year. Repeat it WE ARE NOT GOING TO PLAY IN FINALS THIS YEAR. The whole aim for this year is to get players who we have an invested interest in their future playing for the pride of wearing the Navy Blue. To give them more experience, more game time, more knowledge in how to play footy in a dynamic, strong, competitive arena.  That for this year, it is about experience, growth and knowing that the future of Carlton is on the upward climb.

So to those who bag, criticise, complain, swear and dismiss the players and coaches in words and tones that to be frank make me question how much of a supporter you really are, open the door walk out and don’t come back. Because when we start this climb and become the team that we know they will become, you will be locked out with a stamp on your forehead “NOT A TRUE SUPPORTER”. But if you want to come on this journey with the club and relish in the sheer delightfulness of this climb, then sign-up, support no matter what, because I can tell you that when we do start climbing, just knowing that you are part of this journey, will be so friggin sweet!
